Building capability

Whare Ako

As our industry and organisation evolves at pace to meet the changing needs of New Zealanders, we recognise that what we do today will change and evolve too. This includes the training and development needs of our people.

To ensure that training and learning is not a once a year or every two years occurrence to meet a compliance requirement, we’ve adopted a “learning every day” approach.

Our house of learning

Whare Ako (our house of learning) is our strong commitment to the ongoing learning and development of our people through building and sharing our collective knowledge and expertise.

Whether we have a new cadet just joining us as part of our field teams, in a role supporting others doing the mahi for our customers, or someone who’s been here a bit longer and is looking to move up through the ranks or develop new skills, there are development opportunities for every age, stage and role at Northpower.

We work together to build bright futures for our people, communities and future generations to come.

Northpower is at the forefront of innovation and training development, constantly pushing the boundaries and setting new standards. Whare Ako can be translated to the house of learning or teaching. The wharenui is a gathering place for families, communities and tribes, so symbolises our place to teach, learn and support each other.

Whare Ako is how we build and develop capability here at Northpower. From cadetships in both the trade and engineering streams, to industry-leading pathways, and our talent development programme, we are committed to growing capability from within our organisation, our communities and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our commitment to our people

Whare Ako is our strong commitment to the ongoing learning and developing of our people through building and sharing our collective knowledge and expertise.

As the industry and our organisation evolves, Whare Ako will be a fundamental part of how we operate and deliver – building the skills, culture and leadership we need for our future.

As Northpower prepares to double its impact, Whare Ako will support and develop our people, ensuring we are equipped with the knowledge, skills and the ability to grow.

Whare Ako is focused on building leadership and capability through learning everyday on the job and in the business, specialised training and development, and the sharing knowledge, skills and experience.

Whare Ako is an opportunity for everyone

Whether you’re a new cadet just joining us, part of our field teams, in a role supporting others doing the mahi for our customers or someone who’s been here a bit longer, looking to move up through the ranks or develop new skills, there are development opportunities for every age, stage and role at Northpower.

A huge part of Whare Ako is about building futures for every single person at Northpower to develop clear learning pathways, have discussions about career aspirations, learning goals, and plans to achieve them.

Whare Ako is a uniquely Northpower approach to learning everyday – its about giving and receiving knowledge, being open to new ideas and curious about the future.

Whare Ako includes four main delivery streams:

  • Leadership
  • Structured learning pathways
  • Technical training and certification
  • Career opportunities for our communities

Leadership

Northpower’s leadership capability framework provides foundational guidance as to what goot leadership looks like at Northpower, and is a building block for all of our leadership  development programmes.

Talent Development Programme

Our talent development programme is designed to support our people on their leadership development journey, and grow, stretch and challenge participants to build their leadership capability and confidence in support of Northpower’s ambitious growth strategy.

First line management

Is our programme aligned to the New Zealand Certificate in Management (Level 4) designed to empower our people with the leadership skills to effectively manage a team through teaching skills and knowledge to achieve organisational goals in a multi-cultural environment.

Ko wai au (who am I) leadership programme

Ko wai au  provides contemporary leadership skills development, using Māori frameworks and matauranga (Māori knowledge) on leadership – with a focus on leading self, leading a team, and leading for Northpower.  It offers practical leadership skills, enhanced self and social reflection tools and an increased understanding of how matauranga (Māori knowledge) can be applied effectively in our modern leadership contexts.

Structured learning pathways

Micro-credentials are a formal way of recognising skills and experience. This industry-leading approach aims to provide opportunities for our people to earn formal NZQA-approved credits whilst working at Northpower.  Micro-credentials are delivered as part of the learning pathways and are for specific priority learning and training gaps identified within our learning pathways.

Learning pathways provide clarity and create structure to support the many learning goals of our people, across all roles.

Cadetships at Northpower

We are fully committed to building great careers for local young people through our cadetship programme which offers Pathways into fulltime employment.

Northpower’s trade cadet programme is a fully paid eight-week work-readiness programme which leads to a trades apprenticeship at Northpower.
