Wellbeing

Keeping our people safe

We pride ourselves on our genuine commitment to keeping our people safe, well and healthy both mentally and physically.

We have internally trained Mental Health First Aid Instructors which allow us to provide the opportunity for our people to become Mental Health First Aid Accredited to support their peers, whanau and their wider communities.

Alongside our wider Mental Health First Aid Network, we have an amazing internal peer support network – our Kaitiaki – as well as access to external expertise where required (including an External Employee Assistance Provider).

Our people enjoy regular exciting fitness-oriented challenges, as well as access to either on-site or discounted local gym memberships. We offer discounted medical insurance, and free flu vaccines and annual Molemaps.

Not shy of a physical challenge, we also sponsor the annual Northpower Wild Kiwi multi-sport event at Whangarei Heads, and we’ve even been known to take out the largest corporate team entry at the Taupo ultramarathon!

Our Wellbeing Programme is focused on the work-related factors that could impact our people. Our current priorities are ensuring the systems we have in place promote and enhance the wellbeing of our people and the communities we are a part of.

We have a big focus on increasing the mental health literacy of our organisation and teams. We are doing this by:

Upskilling our people leaders

We utilise the Open Minds eLearning to support our people leaders to build trust and engagement and to promote mental health and wellbeing within their teams.

Mental Health First Aid

We have four trained Mental Health First Aid Instructors within the business who were certified through the Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa contract holder, Te Pou.

Together they have trained over 30 Mental Health First Aiders across Northpower with an aim to have a sustainable long-term program in place for our future.

Mental Health First Aiders are trained to support people experiencing a mental health crisis or challenge.

Connection is a big part of the fabric of our Northpower Whanau. Our Wellbeing Program supports the engagement of our staff by leading and supporting our People Network

Kaitiaki Network

Our Kaitiaki Network has been operating since 2020, with volunteers from every part of the business putting their hand up to be the bridge between te po (the darkness) and te ao (the light). Also trained Mental Health First Aiders, they have an established connection schedule and are constantly growing and learning with each other to support their peers in the best way they can. The Kaitiaki are a confidential listening ear with knowledge of the support resources we have available.

Wahine Toa – women’s network

Our Women’s Network was established in 2020 with a purpose to uplift the mana of each other through sharing our experiences and knowledge. With 90+ members, the network hosts a series of online and in person events across the year and throughout the different depots. From regional morning teas to online webinars on different topics like sleep, menopause and graphic design, there is something for all wahine at Northpower.

Domestic violence first responders

We have 20 DVFree trained responders across our depots.

Our Domestic Violence First Responders were trained by Shine and can support anyone in the workplace by making them aware of how we can support them, connecting them to external resource and/or creating a safety plan.
