As Northpower prepared to take on fault response services for electricity distribution business Powerco in its role as contractor, a more reliable and efficient shift rostering solution was required to support round‑the‑clock operations. The existing approach relied heavily on manual processes, creating unnecessary complexity, version control issues and limited visibility for field staff.
Northpower identified an opportunity to modernise rostering using Microsoft Teams Shifts. Our role was to select, test and implement a solution that would integrate seamlessly with existing systems, support mobile access for responders, and provide Powerco with confidence in fault response coverage from day one.
Delivering this solution required close collaboration between operational, digital and software development teams. The project team evaluated a range of rostering options before selecting Microsoft Teams Shifts, recognising its functionality, mobile capability and compatibility with Northpower’s existing Microsoft licensing.
Once the platform was selected, detailed testing and configuration commenced. Software developers worked through integration challenges, refining how shift data flowed from roster creation through to active status within Powerco’s outage management system. Iterative testing uncovered edge cases that required adjustment, including shift deletions, historical shifts and back‑to‑back roster transitions.
Operational leaders were actively involved throughout testing, providing real‑world context and ensuring the solution would work effectively in live fault scenarios. This collaborative approach ensured the final configuration was practical, reliable, and fit for purpose.
Clear visibility of who is on shift is critical to safe fault response. By replacing manual rostering methods with a single, digital source of truth, the new approach improved co-ordination and reduced the risk of gaps in coverage.
Mobile access allowed fault responders to view their own shifts and team coverage in real time, supporting clearer handovers and better fatigue management. Integration with the outage management system ensured only active, rostered staff were assigned to fault work, strengthening operational control and oversight.
The solution went live as Northpower began fault services for Powerco in Tauranga and Manawatū and Wairarapa. Aside from minor post‑implementation adjustments, the system performed as intended, with staff appearing correctly in the outage management system and shifting on and off duty as scheduled.
Feedback from responders was overwhelmingly positive. Within days of go‑live, teams were actively using Microsoft Teams Shifts on their mobile devices and engaging with features such as open shifts well into future rosters. Interest from other teams has since grown, highlighting the broader potential of the solution across the organisation.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful digital implementation, strong collaboration and user‑focused design can simplify operations, support safe service delivery and build confidence with clients from day one.
