Annual Report 2026

Building capacity for a growing community

The Morrinsville network upgrade is a significant investment in strengthening electricity supply for the Morrinsville community and surrounding areas. Delivered on behalf of Powerco, the project responds to increasing residential and industrial development and the need for a reliable, future ready power network.

Northpower delivered the 33kV underground cabling and associated substation electrical works. The upgrade includes a new substation, expanded switching capacity, and the installation of new high‑voltage underground infrastructure to support long‑term growth and reduce the risk of future outages.

Delivering critical underground and substation works

The project includes the installation of approximately 2.8km of 33kV underground cable between the existing Morrinsville substation and the new Magistrates Avenue substation. These works began in mid‑July 2025 and ran through to October 2025, with delivery managed by Northpower’s central team and supported by specialist subcontractors.

The construction included five separate joint bay locations along the route and two new 33kV cross bonding link boxes were installed at two of these locations.

In parallel, the new Magistrates Avenue substation was constructed.

Managing delivery and future network needs

The team carefully sequenced the project to coordinate the civil works, cabling installation and substation construction, ensuring each stage supports the next. Civil works and building construction were delivered by Marra Construction and Watts & Hughes, with the Magistrates Avenue substation build carried out by Northpower.

This staged approach allowed capacity to be delivered efficiently while maintaining network integrity during construction. The project has been designed to support future load growth and improve resilience across the local electricity network.

Strengthening long‑term reliability

Construction of the new Magistrates Avenue substation site was completed and handed over to Northpower in October 2025.

Northpower then installed the electrical equipment in the substation building and these works were scheduled for completion in June 2026.

Through close collaboration with Powerco and its delivery partners, the project is laying the foundation for a reliable electricity supply that will serve the Morrinsville community well into the future.
