Huntly BESS (battery energy storage system)
Collaborating with Genesis Energy, Northpower delivered battery energy storage infrastructure at Huntly, enabling grid-scale energy storage and strengthening system resilience.
Location: Ruakura Superhub, Waikato
Start date: April 2023
Completion date: May 2026
Project client: Tainui Group Holdings, Ruakura Energy
Project partners: Transpower, PowerNet, Aurecon, Edison Consulting Group, Ergo
Annual Report 2026
Tainui Group Holdings is establishing an independent electricity network to support long‑term development at the Ruakura Superhub, one of Australasia’s largest logistics and industrial hubs. Northpower was engaged to construct a new 33kV to 11kV substation, enabling a secure and dedicated supply for the client’s current and future customers.
Working in close partnership with Tainui Group Holdings and specialist consultants, Northpower delivered a critical piece of infrastructure that underpins future growth, resilience and economic development on iwi‑owned land.

Delivering the Ruakura substation required careful co-ordination across transmission, distribution and client‑owned assets. Two 33kV circuits were supplied from Transpower, feeding transformers that step voltage down to 11kV before connecting to new switchgear within the substation.
Stage one focused on the construction and commissioning of the substation itself. Stage two involved the transition of existing loads onto the new, independent supply. This staged approach allowed continuity of supply while enabling full network separation at completion.
Health and safety was a core focus throughout the project. The worksite was fully fenced and secured, with on‑site security cameras and controlled access to protect the public and workforce.
This project involved multiple design consultants and interfaces between the transmission and distribution systems, creating complexity at both the design and commissioning stages. Ongoing design changes and complex approvals introduced challenges, particularly as commissioning approached.
Strong collaboration, patience and perseverance across Northpower’s team and project partners enabled issues to be worked through while maintaining momentum. This collective approach ensured the substation was safely commissioned and ready to support the client’s long‑term plans.
The completed Ruakura substation provides Tainui Group Holdings with an independent electricity network, Ruakura Energy, supporting future development and reinvesting value back into the iwi. The new asset strengthens supply resilience, enables growth across the Ruakura Superhub, and lays the foundation for decades of reliable electricity service.
