Transmission works associated with transport corridors require precise sequencing and close co-ordination with multiple stakeholders. For this project, Northpower developed constructability reports and delivery methodologies in collaboration with Transpower, designers and NZTA, enabling risks and constraints to be identified early.

Execution involves relocating structures away from the new highway alignment, installing new poles, and transferring loads between circuits in a carefully managed sequence. In several locations, works must be completed at night to avoid daytime highway closures, requiring extended programmes and additional planning around lighting, noise and community impacts. The need to keep one circuit live at all times on one of the double circuit lines adds further complexity, with crews de‑energising and repositioning lines in stages to maintain supply.

This project highlights Northpower’s capability to work within highly constrained, multi‑agency environments, supporting nationally significant transport investment while safeguarding critical national grid transmission infrastructure. Through strong collaboration with Transpower, NZTA and specialist partners, Northpower has helped enable motorway construction to proceed without compromising electricity supply or network resilience.

The works completed will allow transmission assets to operate safely alongside the new transport corridor, supporting both regional growth and long‑term infrastructure performance.
