Temporary (safety) disconnections
Temporary (safety) disconnections help keep your people safe
We can help you and your staff to work safely when you’re planning any maintenance or repair work around the office, yard or factory. If you have any projects coming up that involve any roofing, spouting, painting and water blasting, DIY electrical work, tree trimming or installing scaffolding anywhere near power lines, please talk to us first.
We can arrange a temporary power disconnection while you do the work, which not only keeps your people safe but means you can get back up and running as soon as possible, once the work is complete. We strongly advise using qualified professionals for any electrical work around your business.
Call us to arrange your temporary (safety) disconnection
In most cases, it’s free to have power disconnected between Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4pm as long as you allow us two working days to process your request. To arrange your disconnect, please give us a call on 0800 10 40 40 or go to service.northpower.com and complete the Temporary (Safety) Disconnect form. You will be asked for your name and contact details, the ICP (Installation Control Point) number of the property where the disconnection will take place, and the date and time you would like the power to be disconnected. You can find your ICP number on the meter box or on your power bill.
Need an urgent temporary (safety) disconnect?
If you need a safety disconnection urgently, after hours, on a weekend, or on a public holiday we can help. Please call us on 0800 10 40 40 and let us know the situation so we can assess your situation quickly and get you the help needed as soon as possible. Please note a charge will apply for this service.
Switching the power back on
When you apply for a temporary (safety) disconnection, you will be asked the date and time you would like your disconnection actioned and when you would like your power reconnected. We will contact you to advise when we can complete your request.
If any electrical work has been carried out, we need to see the electrical certificate of compliance from your electrician before we turn the power back on. Sometimes an inspection will be required, however, we’ll let you know if this is required when you make your temporary disconnection booking.
Keep safe and seek professional guidance
As New Zealanders, it can be tempting to want to tackle small electrical jobs around the office, yard or workshop yourself (we’re told DIY and number 8 wire solutions are in our DNA). However, we recommend you use a licensed electrician unless you have previous experience. Installing your own wiring or fixing appliances or other electrical faults is not as simple as it may seem, and puts you at risk of electric shock or causing a fire. You should also comply with the following safety precautions:
- make sure the power is turned off by organising a temporary (safety) disconnection service
- carry out proper safety tests
- do not connect the wiring yourself – this must be done by an electrical inspector
- do not work on mains or main switchboards – a licensed electrician must do this
