Distribution charges discount

Benefiting our Northland consumers

For the year commencing 1 April 2024, Northpower Limited will provide a discount in the form of two payments for the benefit of Northpower consumers totalling an estimated $15.8m.

This will be a discount on Northpower’s distribution charges and the amount which each consumer receives for each eligible ICP will be determined by the usage between 1 April 2024 to 30 September 2024 for the first payment and 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2025 for the second payment based on information supplied to Northpower by the electricity retailers.

The amount will be calculated using the discount rates in our full pricing schedule. This discount will be capped to a maximum payment of $130.34 (plus GST) per payment (a total of $260.68 (plus GST) for the full year) per eligible ICP.

The discount payment will be applied as a credit on the electricity bill from the ICP’s current electricity retailer during November or December 2024 for the first payment and May or June 2025 for the second payment. This is a change to prior years when discount was all paid around November or December.

To qualify as an eligible ICP, an ICP must be supplied from the Northpower electricity network with a registry status of “active” (connected) on 1 November 2024 for the first payment and 1 May 2025 for the second payment, and have a current customer of an electricity retailer on that date for the respective discount payment.

A pricing discount is a discount on Northpower’s electricity distribution charges. The saving from this price reduction is paid out to consumers in the form of two payments, the first credited to your electricity bill in November or December and the second credited the following year in May or June.

The discount payment will be applied as a credit on the electricity bill from the ICP’s current electricity retailer during November or December 2024 for the first payment and May or June 2025 for the second payment. However, retailers sometimes pay this earlier than expected.

  • Eligible ICPs with consumption exceeding 2,000 kWh will receive a single discount of $285.41 including GST.
  • Eligible ICPs with consumption between 1 kWh and 2,000 kWh will receive a single discount of $106.55 including GST.

Yes – and it does not matter which electricity retailer you are with. All retailers are required to pass-through the pricing discount they receive from Northpower on to their customers.

The pricing discount is a discount or reduction to Northpower’s distribution prices. Therefore, you cannot receive more of a discount than you paid in distribution charges.

The discount of $106.55 is due to the lower line’s charges payable each year (0.45 cents a day, on a residential plan). We estimate about 86% of connections will receive the higher amount.
