Central Northland Science & Technology Fair 2023

Northpower proudly sponsors the Central Northland Science & Technology Fair!

Northpower is a proud sponsor of the Central Northland Science & Technology Fair, a competition for local year 7- to 13-year-olds who are passionate about and excel in science and technology. Around 3,000 local students participated in this year’s fair, which has taken place for 45 years.

The quality of entries this year was extremely high, and we congratulate all the participants and winners – in particular, the recipients of the Northpower-sponsored Premier Awards.

The Northpower Consistent Excellence Award went to Jasper Miller-Waugh (Year 13) from Huanui College for his exhibit titled ‘Dirtywatts Micro-Indicator’. This entry demonstrated how to target power use to times when more renewable power is being generated New Zealand-wide, reducing your carbon footprint.

The George (Hoori) Tuhiwai Memorial Award for the project which best integrates Te Ao Māori went to Makareta Gavin & Bella Flay (Year 8) from Whangārei Intermediate for their exhibit ‘Te Kohatu: ko te toka pai rawa atu ki hanga hangi’. This project looked at the best stone to make hangi.

We are particularly proud of Northpower staff member Jose Lumbera’s daughter Mika, who took out the overall Best of Fair prize. Ka rawe Northpower whānau!
