Northpower launches new network capacity maps to support growth and smarter energy connections
Northpower has launched its new Hosting Capacity Maps, giving developers, businesses and communities greater visibility of where there is capacity available on the electricity network to support new connections, renewable generation and electrification.
The interactive maps provide clear, location-based information about how much additional load or generation the network can accommodate, helping customers make earlier, better‑informed decisions when planning projects.
As the Whangārei and Kaipara regions grow and energy use changes, visibility of network capacity is becoming increasingly important. Electric vehicles, electrification of heat and industrial processes, and locally connected renewable generation are all placing new demands on distribution networks.
Users can search the maps by location to see indicative available capacity on the network for both low voltage and high voltage connections. It shows planned and confirmed large scale load and generation projects that may impact the network’s capacity, including areas where connections may be constrained or require network upgrades, providing early signals to support project feasibility and planning discussions.
This enables developers and customers to engage with Northpower earlier and more productively, reducing uncertainty, time, and cost. It allows for smarter investment decisions by developers and businesses, integrated planning between electricity networks, councils and communities, efficient use of existing infrastructure and a smoother transition to a more electrified, low‑emissions future.
While the Hosting Capacity Maps provide an important starting point, Northpower emphasises that the information is indicative. Detailed connection assessments are still required, and early engagement with Northpower’s Connections team remains essential for larger or more complex projects. The maps are designed to support earlier conversations, not replace the existing application and approval processes, which includes a pre-application meeting if required. The approach aligns with best practice across the sector.
More about complex connectionsThe release of the capacity maps reflects Northpower’s commitment to transparency and collaboration as the region prepares for continued growth, electrification of transport and industry, and increased uptake of distributed energy resources. Northpower will continue to refine and update the maps over time as the network evolves and new data becomes available.
