Transmission lines team Safety in Action day
On a wet and wintry Thursday in early July, Northpower’s Transmission Lines team gathered at the Matamata Council Conference Centre for a dedicated Safety in Action day, bringing people together to focus on health, safety, environment and wellbeing.
The day was opened by Chief Operating Officer – Energy Services Josie Boyd, whose remarks reinforced Northpower’s shared commitment to safety and set a focused and positive tone for the programme.
The event featured two guest speakers who brought practical insight and personal perspective to key wellbeing and environmental topics. Wellbeing Manager Matt McCormick led an engaging session on mental health, while Environmental Advisor Gwynneth Einarsen guided a discussion on erosion and sediment control and its importance in day to day operations.
Throughout the day, teams worked through a range of core safety topics relevant to transmission line work, including falling objects, light utility vehicle safety, power tool safety, and earthing and bonding. These sessions encouraged open discussion and reinforced the importance of practical controls on site.
A variety of Northpower leaders and specialists took part in the day, with contributions from HSQE Manager – Transmission and Central Therese Carroll and People & Capability Manager – Operations Sharron Sun who supported discussions and engaged directly with the team.
The session concluded with a lively safety quiz, providing an opportunity to test knowledge and reinforce key messages in an informal setting. Trainee Line Mechanic Zinzan Coop took out first place for the 2025 quiz.
Safety representatives also played a central role in the day, leading icebreakers and presenting the Safe Team Meeting. The team acknowledged the contribution of our safety representatives Jake Smith, Corey Nahu, Sydney Griffiths and Francis Stapp, as well as Robbie Gilmore for capturing the day, and Vanessa Levae for co-ordinating the event.
The Safety in Action Day reinforced Northpower’s focus on looking after one another, with a strong reminder to stay alert to drop zones, wear seatbelts, maintain equal potential zones and, above all, look after your peers.
