Wetland regeneration at Ōhinewai
In June 2025, Northpower joined Transpower, Restore Native and local hapu at Ōhinewai, Waikato for a wetland restoration planting day focused on restoring whenua (land) and improving the health of Lake Waikare.
The initiative centres on an area of land that was once a thriving wetland but had been drained and converted to pasture decades ago.
Transpower collaborated with local hapu and Restore Native to identify land on the lessee’s property that was previously a wetland, designing a staged restoration programme to return the site and its connecting stream networks to their natural wetland state.
Restoring the wetland will enhance its natural ability to filter pathogens, sediment and animal effluent before they reach Lake Waikare, while also creating habitat that supports the return of native fish and eels. The project reflects a shared commitment to environmental protection, kaitiakitanga and long term water quality improvements.
The planting day brought together nearly 40 participants, who collectively planted 2,500 native saplings and wetland species. The scale of the effort marked a significant step forward in restoring the whenua to its original landscape and supporting ecological regeneration across the wider catchment.
Northpower’s involvement formed part of its broader environmental stewardship efforts, working alongside sector partners and hapu to deliver practical restoration outcomes on the ground. The event also provided an opportunity for teams to connect with local hapū and contribute directly to projects that support community and environmental wellbeing.
The Ōhinewai planting day is one of a number of collaborative initiatives contributing to the long term restoration of Lake Waikare and its surrounding ecosystems.
