Digging near power poles

Important rules about digging

Due to the risk of destabilisation causing collapse, you cannot dig or excavate within five (5) meters of our power poles without a Close Approach Consent.  Please note that we’ll need a minimum of two working days to process your application.

We’ll also advise if you’ll need additional pole supports to prevent poles collapsing – and if necessary, we’ll come on site to give you on the spot support.

Check out this video explaining the importance of checking ‘before you dig’.

Don't forget about overhead lines

When you’re digging near power poles you also need to consider overhead lines. If you hit an overhead line there’s a real risk of electrocution, explosion, flashover or fire.

You should also be aware of underground lines, which can still be near overhead lines.
