Critical risk control management

The heart of everything we do

To put safety at the heart of everything we do, Northpower utilises critical control management as a key health and safety risk management model.

We’ve identified ten critical risks in our business – that pose a likelihood to cause serious harm or a fatality.

Our Critical Risk Control Management (CRCM) programme applies a five-step process to assess each risk, and identify the related critical controls:

  • Clearly defining our material unwanted events
  • Identify controls
  • Identify critical controls
  • Define performance and reporting criteria
  • Verify and report

Northpower’s CRCM programme kicked off with Live Electricity in 2020, as we looked to control and manage risks for our frontline crews.

Every one of our 1,200 staff took part in a CRCM workshop, highlighting the importance and potential of this critical risk to our business.

Learning modules for live electricity risk are aligned to SM-EI (Safety Manual – Electricity Industry) ensuring a consistent approach. Our operational staff also completed practical assessments using a mix of internal and external industry professionals.

Since then, we’ve focused on our other critical risks including:

  • moving vehicles
  • falling objects
  • working at height
  • public safety (electricity network contracting)
  • contractor management
  • mental health
  • and are progressing with:
  • fatigue
  • personal security
  • hazardous substances
  • confined spaces
