Wairua hydro power station

Bringing power home to Wairua

We’re modernising an essential hydro asset for Northland’s energy resilience. The project involves a $25.6 million upgrade to future-proof energy supply at Wairua River, near Whangārei.

The upgrade nearly doubles renewable energy output, increasing annual generation from 12.5 GWh to 23.5 GWh.

Key milestones include ordering the plant in October 2025 and project close-out by May 2027, covering installation and commissioning phases.

Honouring our environment and heritage

For over 114 years, our power station has been part of this landscape.

Today, we are committed to protecting its cultural and environmental significance, working in partnership with local hapū to ensure our operations respect and enhance the mauri of the surrounding environment.

Through this project, we are introducing eel-exclusion screens, strengthening our fish management practices, and deepening our engagement with the community to uphold kaitiakitanga for future generations.

Leading with innovation

The new capacity can power around 3,500 homes, doubling its current output. We have sourced state-of-the-art technology to improve the power station’s production and efficiency.

Upgrades include installing vertical Francis turbines, generators, inlet valves, and enhancing control systems.
