Northpower is the 100% locally owned electricity distribution company, that owns, operates and maintains the electricity network in Whangārei and Kaipara.
Our network connects to the national electricity grid and carries electricity to local substations, then across our lines to provide safe, secure and reliable electricity to homes and business across the region.
We’ve been operating for nearly 100 years and our customers are also our owners – every customer connected to our network is an owner through the Northpower Electric Power Trust.
Our energy future
Our network includes more than 6,600km of line, servicing over 63,000 connected customers across one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s fastest growing regions.
It was originally built in the 1950’s, so is aging at the same time we’re experiencing increasing demand. Looking to the future we’re planning how best to cater for growing demand – including how to build additional capacity as Aotearoa New Zealand moves to decarbonise and more electricity is required to power our transport, production and manufacturing sectors.
